During this fit food workshop, you will explore food from the past. What is  healthy and sustainable food? You’ll perform food experiments and create a vegetarian, healthy dish with herbs you can pick from the gardens of the Muiderslot.

Tomatoes, pumpkins, potatoes, cabbages, carrots and pods. You could find all this ‘fit food’ in the 17th century (and still today) in the vegetable garden of Muiderslot Castle. There was a cabbage quarter, a leaf and potherbs quarters, a root quarter and a mixed quarter. Gardeners had their hands full working the soil and the crops.

That sounds healthy, food from your garden. In the Middle Ages, vegetable recipes in European cuisine were hard to find. It was farmers’ food, and not for the elite. But in Arabic cookbooks from that era, veggies were indeed popular! At the end of the 15th century, the use of ‘fit food’ increased in Italy. This trend slowly trickled through into all European cuisines, peaking in the 17th century.

Today, we love fit food and we hope to inspire everyone to eat healthy and be sweet to the planet. During this fit food workshop, kids learn all about this.
