The green Muiderslot
Listening to the castle, nature and the elements. The unique sustainability policy of the Muiderslot.
Sustainability Policy
Sustainability is an integral part of how the Muiderslot operates. Not as a separate project, but as a way of looking and acting. With the ambition of a future-proof Muiderslot; step by step CO₂-neutral.
Muiderslot green plan
That approach is laid out in the Muiderslot Green Plan (2025-2028). This plan focuses on making the castle grounds and operations more sustainable and green. The focus is on preserving natural heritage, telling green stories and strengthening the relationship between people and nature.
No glass bell jar
A medieval castle requires customization. Not everything can or needs to be heated. The Muiderslot therefore always looks at what the castle itself needs. No collection hangs in damp rooms and no activities take place. Here, the building is given priority.
Renewable energy
Wherever possible, sustainability is being implemented. Museum Cafe The Garden Room is virtually gas-free and runs on a heat pump and solar panels. The energy generated is also used in the castle. Because the castle and offices are monuments, additional energy is purchased as sustainably as possible and used deliberately.
Nature as a starting point
The Muiderslot manages nearly 60 acres of grounds. Water from the moat is used for the gardens and orchard. Thanks to cooperation with the water board and the municipality, the moat is again connected to open water. As a result, water quality has improved and fish have returned.
In and around the castle there is space for animals and plants. The gardens consist of native species, without artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Smart management creates a landscape where biodiversity has space.
