Participation and accessibility

The Muiderslot aims to reach a wide and diverse audience. Our programs are for people of all ages and backgrounds. Inclusion is important to us, in our building and in our activities.

Muiderslot: place of encounter

The Muiderslot strives to reach a wide and diverse audience. Our programs are accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. Inclusion is central, both in our physical spaces and in our activities. By using digital means such as audio tours and interactive elements, we make the heritage of the Muiderslot accessible to everyone.

The Muiderslot as a place of encounter

The Muiderslot sees it as its social role to be a meeting place for everyone, including people for whom a museum visit is not self-evident. Together with social partners, such as Versa Welzijn, Gooise Meren Toegankelijk, LFB and the Maatjesproject, we are working to create an inclusive environment. We are expanding successful projects and strengthening our social significance, with the aim of reaching more social groups and making the Muiderslot a place for everyone.

Relevant to the region

We actively combat loneliness and promote encounters between young and old. Together with the Maatjesproject Gooi- en Vechtstreek, we organize monthly activities such as cooking together or drawing in the castle garden, thus stimulating exchange and togetherness. Zo maken we van het Muiderslot een plek voor iedereen.

Together against loneliness

Het vrijheidsdiner van 2022 vond plaats in de Ridderzaal van het kasteel. De gasten zijn met elkaar aan het praten, en er staan roze tulpen op tafel.

Food connects

The annual Ratatouille Dinner brings people from the region together with status holders and newcomers. Together we celebrate diversity with dishes from all over the world. We also organize the Freedom Dinner around May 5, where we reflect together on the value of freedom.

Green Summer School

Together with Versa Welzijn, we organize the annual Green Summer School for children from families with little living expenses. During the summer vacations they discover sustainability, healthy eating and green heritage in a playful way.

The sun is shining. The red gate of Muiderslot Castle is open to receive guests.

Outside the castle walls

The Muiderslot is also active outside the castle walls because, as a cultural institution, we are part of the world around us. For example, with our program “Muiderslot outside the Walls,” we provide activities in regional nursing homes and day care centers for the elderly and people who are physically unable to come to the castle.

Exploring language and culture

With Bibliotheek Gooi+, we organize language excursions and language cafes for non-native speakers, where they practice their Dutch and learn more about Dutch culture. The Nieuwkomerstour, in cooperation with the municipality, helps newcomers discover both the Netherlands and their own culture.

Physical Accessibility & Sense the Castle

The Muiderslot, once built as an inaccessible castle, is not easily accessible for people with physical disabilities. Therefore, we have created a special route through the castle gardens for wheelchair and walker users. We are exploring with The Handicapped Child Foundation how to make the castle workshop and knights’ hall accessible. In the program Sense the Castle, we specifically focus on the use of all senses, for people with visual impairments.

Accessibility Advisors

Meet the accessibility consultants at Rijksmuseum Muiderslot.

In cooperation with them, we are looking at how we can make the Rijksmuseum Muiderslot more accessible step by step. For example, they also test our audio tour and website, paying attention to clear language and comprehensibility.

Melvin Verheij

Read bio
My name is Melvin Verheij and I work at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. I have non-congenital brain injury (NAH) after being in a car accident when I was 18. I believe that everyone, without or with disabilities, should be able to enjoy the castle. Because of this, I became an accessibility advisor for the Muiderslot.

Emma Jansen

I am Emma Jansen, and I have Autism and ADHD. I pay very close attention to details, find language interesting and have an interest in art. Sometimes the way you write/show something is very important to the recipient. It can captivate you, but also tire you. I enjoy being able to do my part and let people know how I experience the texts and images.

I’m Melvin. I especially like to be able to help people get started, that there are no difficult words present so it’s easier for people with disabilities and just be able to walk around there as well.

David Hogeman

I am David Hogeman. Why I want to be an advisor to the Muiderslot is that I can give them advice for people without disabilities and advise them to be able to do it differently or want to do it differently. Because if people with disabilities can’t understand it then I can advise them to be able to do it differently.

Dennis Teuling

I’m Dennis Teuling and I enjoy being a consultant so that more people who are in wheelchairs, sensitive to stimuli or who have difficulty learning can come to and enjoy the museum and café.

Caroline Herring

My name is Caroline Haring and I wanted to explain to you why I find it interesting and important to give advice about the Muiderslot. I find it important to have an overview at both the Tower Route and the Knight’s Route for me and also other visitors who want a guided tour. That includes pasting directional arrows so visitors can know their way well enough through that. That’s my tip! I would love to go there again sometime as an activity.

Ans Broelman

I am Ans Broelman and come from Soesterberg. Someone with a mild intellectual disability. I live independently with a little help from a care provider. And I’m an ambassador for the Muiderslot. Because I think it’s very important that everything is accessible to everyone. And that everything is told in easy language. The website is better for everyone. So that I can help the Muiderslot to make it even better. I have a lot of fun doing this.
