The Plants at Muiderslot Castle
This summer, the Muiderslot castle gardens are hosting an exhibition titled “Tropical Plants.” As early as the 17th century, P.C. Hooft, a resident of Muiderslot, had plants from places such as Africa, the Americas, and Asia. But what kinds of plants were they? And how did they end up here? Discover the stories behind these plants!
Plants with a Story
Plants are indispensable. Not only do they provide the oxygen we breathe, but they also play a vital role in our daily lives—from a cup of tea to the construction of our homes, or the bouquet of flowers we give as a gift. It was no different in the past.
In the 17th century, when P.C. Hooft lived at Muiderslot Castle, plants from distant lands such as Africa, Asia, and the Americas were already growing here. But what kinds of plants were they? How did they end up here? And what stories lie behind them?
Through various plants, you’ll discover how these “green travelers” are connected to trade, exchange, and the colonial past. The exhibition shows how nature, history, and global connections come together in the castle gardens.
Why at Muiderslot?
For centuries, Muiderslot Castle and its gardens have been a place where nature and history come together. In the summer, this comes to life even more. During the Summer Castle festival, the gardens, the water, and the landscape provide the backdrop for discovery and wonder.
The “Tropical Plants” exhibition ties in seamlessly with this. As you stroll through the gardens, you’ll not only see what’s growing and blooming, but you’ll also discover how these plants are connected to stories from far across the sea. This adds an extra layer to the outdoor experience around the castle: from local nature to world history.
