In spring, the flowers in the gardens of Muiderslot castle start blooming again. From 2 April to 12 June 2022, special photos of flowers will be on display in the castle. In the presentation Flower Power: Floral Portraits by Dennis A-Tjak, the photographer reveals his fascination with historic flower species in the Netherlands and far beyond its borders.
A-Tjak’s works tell stories of beauty, vulnerability and transience:
For me, flowers are a metaphor for my emotions. Feelings of joy and emotion, but also of contemplation and gloom. I process every flower that appears in front of my camera until the image coincides with my state of mind. Each flower tells part of my story. The Muiderslot with its beautiful gardens is a great backdrop for my work.
Flowers and the Muiderslot
Flowers and the castle have been inextricably linked for centuries, both inside and out. You can hear more about this in a special audio tour, while visiting the photo presentation. Dennis A-Tjak himself explains his work and talks about the connection with the history of the castle. There will also be other activities taking place in the context of Flower Power, check out our agenda.
About Dennis A-Tjak
Dennis A-Tjak was born in 1961 in Paramaribo where his grandfather was director of the city garden. As a child, Dennis wanted to be a painter or a florist. He eventually became a photographer with flowers as his speciality. He made his name with a penetrating series of portraits of old tulip varieties, which was exhibited at Paleis Het Loo. He also exhibited in the West-Fries Museum with a series of photographs about Indonesian flora, imported into the Netherlands by the Dutch East India Company in the 17th and 18th centuries.
