Help! On Friday evenings, 7, 14, 21 and 28 October 2022, Rijksmuseum Muiderslot will disappear under water by means of a film projection. A disastrous scenario that is coming ever closer with rising sea levels. Exactly 350 years ago the area around the castle was deliberately flooded to stop enemy troops. If you are curious to see how that happened and to see how the Muiderslot will disappear under water in 2022, you can visit the castle on one of these evenings.

Stories about water

For centuries Muiderslot Castle has been closely associated with the water in the area. Not only is the castle the oldest moated castle in the Netherlands, it was also built on a strategic location by the water. Moreover, water was crucial to stay alive. Think of water for brewing beer, but also for fish to eat or water that was needed to grow the vegetables and herbs in the gardens. Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot is also part of the Dutch Waterlines and the Defence Line of Amsterdam. These lines of defense are sĂł special, that they are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Sounds interesting? Then visit in the evening on 7, 14, 21 or 28 October 2022.

‘Disastrous’ guided tours

October is the Dutch Month of History. This year’s theme is ‘What a Disaster!’ 350 Years ago was a disaster year for the Netherlands. The country was attacked from all sides. Muiden changed into a place at the front. Muiderslot Castle became the workplace of Prince Johan Maurits who was in charge of the defense of the Netherlands. It was close, but Muiden was not taken.

On various dates in October there are regular daytime tours in which disasters of the past centuries are discussed, starting with the disaster year of 1672. Even after that year Muiderslot Castle still experienced difficult moments. The castle was looted, almost demolished and recently closed to the public for no less than 280 days during the corona pandemic. Want to know more? Book a tour (Dutch spoken)!
